Small dogs don’t always seem to know they’re small until they’re around big dogs.
It’s often a source of tension when little Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers walk into a one-size-fits-all dog park with overactive Danes or Rottweilers, but the North Okanagan Regional District has found a solution.
They have created a small park for small dogs at Mutrie Dog Park in Vernon.
“The new section of Mutrie Dog Park will provide a fenced section for little furry friends who aren’t comfortable with medium and large dogs,” the North Okanagan Regional District said in a press release. “Dogs of all sizes, including small dogs, are welcome in the rest of the park.”
Once construction is complete, which will begin in the fall, the upgraded dog park will include a fence, access gates, a trash can, a dog bag dispenser and signage to identify the space.
Further plans are in the works after the addition of the small dog section. Future improvement plans include more updated signage, planting and irrigation projects, resurfacing of trails, water fountains and permanent toilets.
